Regenerative aesthetics and undetectable maintenance: the doctor's guide to the UK's biggest shift in facial aesthetics

Regenerative medicine and undetectable maintenance now dominate UK facial aesthetics. Doctor Tina Bani explains the regenerative toolkit — Profhilo, polynucleotides, exosomes, bio-stimulators — and the maintenance model keeping patients looking like themselves.

Two phrases now dominate every serious conversation in UK facial aesthetics: regenerative medicine and undetectable maintenance. One describes a scientific shift — from adding foreign volume to prompting skin to repair itself. The other describes a behavioural one: patients moving from occasional dramatic intervention to small, regular treatments that keep them looking like themselves, indefinitely.

Together they're the biggest change in aesthetics since injectables went mainstream — and they describe precisely how we practise at Skiin. Here's the doctor's guide to both.

What is regenerative aesthetics?

Traditional aesthetics was architectural: filler adds volume, toxin relaxes muscle, and the practitioner rebuilds. Regenerative aesthetics flips the model. Instead of replacing tissue, treatment signals your own cells to behave younger — stimulating fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen and elastin, repairing rather than disguising.

The results differ in character, not just mechanism. Regenerative results appear gradually over weeks, look like your own tissue (because they are), and age with you rather than against you. It's why patients describe them as 'looking like myself on a good day' rather than 'having had something done'.

The regenerative toolkit

Bioremodelling — Profhilo

Profhilo is the gateway treatment of regenerative aesthetics: ultra-pure hyaluronic acid that spreads through the skin and switches on collagen and elastin production across large areas. Two sessions produce a hydrating, firming effect on the whole face.

Polynucleotides — the regenerative breakthrough

Polynucleotides (PDRN) are the fastest-growing treatment in UK aesthetics — purified DNA fragments that drive cellular repair and skin renewal at the most fundamental level. Their signature use is the delicate under-eye area, where they regenerate thin skin that nothing else could meaningfully change.

Exosomes — the signalling frontier

Exosome therapy has seen exponential search growth, and for good reason: exosomes are the messengers cells use to coordinate repair. Applied in skin and hair restoration, they instruct tissue to regenerate — and pair naturally with needling treatments, as our guide to treatment stacking explains.

Bio-stimulators — collagen that compounds

Sculptra and Radiesse sit at the structural end of regenerative treatment: injectables that stimulate your body to rebuild its own collagen scaffold over months. Volume that grows — from you.

Regenerative devices and platelets

Energy devices like RF microneedling and LaseMD Ultra trigger the same wound-healing response in the dermis, while the vampire facial (PRP) uses your own platelets as the regenerative signal. The full skin rejuvenation programme combines these layers.

Undetectable maintenance: the behavioural shift

The second trend is about when people treat. The old model — one dramatic intervention every few years, followed by gradual fade — is being replaced by undetectable maintenance: small, regular, regenerative treatments that keep skin ahead of ageing so there's never anything dramatic to correct.

It's the aesthetics equivalent of dental hygiene. You don't wait for a tooth to fall out; you see the hygienist twice a year. Regenerative maintenance — a course of skin boosters, twice-yearly Profhilo, seasonal laser — works the same way, and it's what patients under 35 mean when they talk about collagen banking: maintaining structural collagen before loss begins.

Patients on a maintenance plan age more slowly and more cheaply than patients who play catch-up — and because each treatment is small, no one ever notices any of them. Undetectable is the point.

Why regenerative treatment needs a doctor

Regenerative medicine is medicine. PDRN, exosomes and bio-stimulators are clinical agents with dosing, contraindications and technique-dependent results, and the 'regenerative' label is being borrowed freely by non-medical operators. The right treatment for you is a diagnostic decision — which tissue, which layer, which phase of life — and that's a doctor's job. Every regenerative treatment at Skiin is diagnosed and performed by a GMC-registered doctor.

Frequently asked questions about regenerative aesthetics

What is regenerative aesthetics?

Aesthetic treatment that stimulates your own skin to repair and rebuild — collagen, elastin and cellular renewal — rather than adding artificial volume. Profhilo, polynucleotides, exosomes and bio-stimulators are the main examples.

What is undetectable maintenance?

Small, regular treatments scheduled so ageing is managed continuously and results never look 'done'. A maintenance plan is typically one or two treatments per quarter, designed by your doctor around your skin's cycle.

Are regenerative treatments better than fillers?

They solve different problems. Regenerative treatments improve skin quality and structure; filler restores specific lost volume. Most natural-looking full-face plans combine both — regenerative for quality, filler only where structure genuinely needs it.

When should I start regenerative maintenance?

Most patients start in their late 20s to mid 30s, when collagen production begins its natural decline — but the honest answer is a skin assessment. Some 40-year-old faces need correction first, then maintenance; some 28-year-olds are already collagen banking sensibly.
